LIVE: VOLCANO CHOIR
Live review: Volcano Choir, O2 Academy, Bristol, 11th October 2013
Members from the Collections of Colonies of Bees, and Bon Iver’s front man Justin Vernon came together as Volcano Choir at Bristol’s O2 Academy, on November 10th to give a breath taking concert, after releasing their new album ‘Repave’.
The evening atmospherically eased in with soulful lyrics, beautifully winding harmonies and skilled guitar accompaniment, by a humbling young woman from London, Denai Moore. After her unbelievable week which included performing her single ‘Gone’ on Jools Holland, she seemed overjoyed to perform as the support act at Volcano Choir’s concert with Justin Vernon, one of her inspirations. Nevertheless she was not out of her depth, holding the audience in enticed stillness.
The Wisconsin band certainly didn’t ease in quietly, filling the venue with Justin’s ethereal and tantalising falsetto against an array of synthesised sounds, thrilling guitar and flawless execution of the drums. No one in the audience could doubt the technical expertise of the band, evident of their musical respect and friendly relations between band members off stage giving a believable and perfectly accomplished performance.
The enthusiasm they conducted to the audience was matched by Justin’s performance behind a podium, taking their loyal fans through a musical journey. It was captivating and encompassed the senses, with a pulsating bass and extraordinary rhythmic lighting creating an overwhelming connection between the band and the audience.
The bewitching concert, can be summed up by Justin’s line from the sensational ‘Byegone’, “he’s a legend, I’m a legend”, a true portrayal of the musical conjoining of Volcano Choir once again, bringing a unique, organic sound to their UK tour.
